Book the learning week before the big ski area
For a first ski holiday, start with Les Gets if you want a named practice area that companions can visit, La Plagne if you want protected beginner zones in a larger resort choice, Seefeld if a separate practice area appeals, or Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis if adults and children need different courses. Book instruction for complete beginners. Being taken to an easy-looking piste by a friend is not a substitute for a lesson.
A good first booking puts the right lesson, suitable practice space and a manageable morning journey together. It does not need the largest lift pass. The shortlist below explains why each place is worth investigating and what could make you reject it.

- A named learning area rather than a generic resort label
- A practical distinction that changes who should book
Choose the lesson, then choose the room
Send the school your age group, whether you have ever skied, your preferred teaching language and exact travel dates. Ask for the complete-beginner group, not simply a low-level improver group. Obtain the start day, meeting location, lesson hours and what happens if a group cannot run. Do this before paying for non-refundable accommodation.
Group tuition is a sensible comparison when you want company and a repeated lesson pattern. A private lesson is worth pricing if you are anxious, have limited time, or need a pace that a group cannot promise. It is not a guarantee of learning by a particular day. Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis describes both formats and explicitly separates the lift pass from the lesson fee.
Now compare two rooms by their route to that exact meeting point. Count the walk in boots, any bus or gondola, and the time needed to collect children. At La Plagne, use the CoolSki map for the chosen base. At Les Gets, remember that Mappys is on the Chavannes plateau. A convenient supermarket does not compensate for missing the lesson each morning.

Ask each seller for a total covering accommodation, travel, transfers, baggage, lessons, equipment hire and suitable lift access. Add meals that are not included and winter-sports insurance. Keep these lines separate even if a package bundles some of them, so you can compare like with like.
Ask the school which pass its actual course requires before buying a full-area ticket or assuming you can learn without one. A beginner-branded ticket is not universal permission: Grandvalira’s school page, for example, specifically excludes beginner passes for school services. That is a useful warning against applying one resort’s rules to another.
Rent skis and boots for the first trip rather than buying them to complete a packing list. Allow time for fitting before the first lesson, report painful or loose boots to the hire shop, and ask how to return for adjustments. Arrange a helmet and eye protection. Buy or borrow suitable clothing separately; equipment hire does not mean every garment is included.

On arrival, find the meeting point and collect hire equipment if the shop’s collection window permits. Put the school booking and lift ticket somewhere you can reach without unpacking everything. Allow a full arrival day when comparing journeys; arriving late and fitting equipment just before the lesson creates avoidable pressure.
For the opening lessons, make the lesson the fixed part of the day. Leave the rest flexible for food, rest and only the practice your instructor recommends. In the middle of the holiday, ask the instructor to identify a specific area where you can practise independently, including the lift and the return route. Do not use a piste colour or another beginner’s progress as permission to move on.
Near the end, repeat suitable terrain if that is what you need. You do not owe the group a longer descent, a particular grade or a photograph at the top. If fatigue, poor visibility or deteriorating conditions make practice unhelpful, stop. This is a planning pattern, not a promise that everyone will ski independently after a week.
Keep a mixed group together without skiing the same runs
Separate the skiing plans and share meals or time in the village. Agree a meeting point that a learner can reach without skiing beyond their ability. Les Gets’ pedestrian access to Mappys can help a companion join part of the day. Seefeld’s no-pedestrian rule inside Sportis Kinderland makes that same plan unsuitable there.
For children, match the course age and ability rules separately from the adults’ arrangements. A children’s area is not automatically an adult learning space, childcare service or place where parents can remain. Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis lists separate children’s areas and adult tuition; use the actual course booking to work out supervision, lunch and collection.
Skiing for beginners: why choose Les Gets?Prepare for ordinary problems, not ambitious terrain
Before travel, read the winter-sports section of the insurance policy, including rescue, medical treatment, equipment and the activities it excludes. Carry the accommodation address and local emergency information. Follow marked closures and the school’s instructions; stay on terrain appropriate to your level. This guide does not teach skiing technique or off-piste travel.
If a lesson or lift is cancelled, contact the provider about its actual rebooking or refund terms before making a replacement purchase. Choose a base where you are willing to spend a non-skiing afternoon, and keep spare time rather than a full timetable of skiing goals. The useful result of a first holiday is knowing whether you want another one and what support you need next.
