A ski network, not one resort
Les 3 Vallées, also called the Three Valleys, is a linked ski-area network in the French Alps. It is not an administrative region and not a single village where every room has the same access. The operator groups Courchevel, Méribel, Brides-les-Bains, Les Menuires, Saint-Martin-de-Belleville, Val Thorens and Orelle as its seven resort destinations.
Choose the place you want to sleep before choosing the largest pass. A local learning holiday, an intermediate week exploring several valleys and a spa-town stay with morning uplift are different uses of the same network. The best base is the one whose ordinary mornings and evenings work for your party.
Ski places and areas in France: what ski resorts are in the 3 Valleys in the French Alps ? - Les 3 ValléesVal Thorens, Méribel or Courchevel?
Start with Val Thorens for a high-resort, ski-focused holiday. Its local beginner product gives learners a route into the mountain without making the full network their first purchase. The trade-off is a high mountain resort setting rather than a lower village with forested surroundings.
Méribel is the central-network comparison. Méribel Centre has shops, restaurants and a swimming pool; Méribel Village is a separate hamlet with the Golf chairlift and buses towards the centre; Mottaret is higher and geared towards ski-area access. Choose among them using the journey to the intended lift and school, not simply the word Méribel on the booking.
Courchevel is another multi-village resort, not a synonym for Courchevel 1850. The operator describes six villages on the mountainside. Compare the particular village, access lift and evening setting before comparing hotel prices. A higher-profile address is not automatically better for a child's class or a mixed party's dinner plans.
Courchevel's six named bases are Saint-Bon, Le Praz, La Tania, Village, Moriond and Courchevel 1850. Le Praz gives a traditional village comparison; La Tania is the forested, car-free option; Village and Moriond are distinct accommodation searches rather than cheaper labels for 1850. The network's resort page identifies the Praz gondola towards 1850 and the Grangettes connection from Village. Use the dated operating hours for the stay, particularly for a dinner return; an old extended-hours announcement is not a current night-transport promise.
Ski places and areas in France: what ski resorts are in the 3 Valleys in the French Alps ? - Les 3 ValléesLes Menuires, Saint-Martin, Brides-les-Bains and Orelle
Les Menuires is worth comparing for a practical ski-base search with several distinct neighbourhoods. The operator names La Croisette, Les Bruyères, Preyerand, Les Fontanettes and Grand Reberty. Shortlist by the school and lift routine first; a resort-wide search can hide the difference between two apartments on opposite sides of the base.
Saint-Martin-de-Belleville is the quieter village comparison, with a historic centre, church and local museum. Choose it when a village evening matters alongside access to skiing, then establish the uplift and return plan for the wider days you want. Do not treat a calmer base as proof that all its access terrain suits a beginner.
Brides-les-Bains is a spa-town base below the main ski area. Compare it for a holiday that gives significant time to the town and thermal-spa offering, but account for the morning journey to skiing. A lower room price is not the whole comparison if it adds access time every day.
Orelle is the distinct Maurienne-side gateway, with hamlets and gondola access. It should not be routed through Moûtiers simply because other 3 Vallées resorts use that gateway. Its lift-based access also makes operational hours part of the accommodation and arrival decision, especially with luggage.
Ski places and areas in France: what ski resorts are in the 3 Valleys in the French Alps ? - Les 3 ValléesWho needs a full 3 Vallées pass?
A beginner taking a local course should buy the pass that covers that course and realistic practice, not the one with the most kilometres. Val Thorens' operator explicitly distinguishes carpet access, a beginner pass, local-area access and Les 3 Vallées access. Use that distinction when comparing a learner's holiday, and ask the school which product the booked lessons require.
Confident intermediates planning to move between valleys are the clearest reason to compare full-network access. Sketch the likely days: local warm-up, a cross-valley outing, perhaps another area, and enough flexibility for weather. A large pass is poor value if the group's ability or enthusiasm keeps every day local.
For experienced skiers, the network gives variety, but the day's open connections still decide what is practical. Set a turn-back time and return route before heading away from your accommodation valley. A full-area ticket does not include a guaranteed late lift home, and a map connection is not a promise of good visibility or suitable snow on a particular afternoon.
BEGINNERS - ValThorensGetting here from the UK: choose the right valley
For the Tarentaise-side resorts, Moûtiers is the main gateway to compare. The official network guide lists onward buses and taxis towards Courchevel, Méribel, the Belleville valley and Brides-les-Bains. From the UK, match your rail itinerary to the actual final bus or booked transfer. A train arriving in the valley does not deliver you to a chalet.
For Val Thorens, the resort identifies the S63 connection from Moûtiers and the bus station at Place des Arolles. For another base, choose the matching route and stop rather than using Val Thorens' connection as a template. Put the last walk or accommodation collection in the same itinerary.
For flights, compare Geneva, Lyon, Chambéry and Grenoble against the transfer available for your date, party and resort. The lowest flight price can be cancelled out by an awkward private-transfer requirement. Orelle belongs in a separate Maurienne-side arrival comparison; lift-based travel with luggage must be a booked, operating-hours-compatible plan, not an improvised shortcut after a delayed flight.
Access to the world's largest ski area - Les 3 ValléesWhen to go, accommodation and total cost
If your reason for choosing Les 3 Vallées is cross-network skiing, use dates when the intended connections are planned to operate. Do not take one high resort's season dates as the opening calendar for every village and valley. For an early or late holiday, assess local skiing and wider connections separately before committing.
Compare a self-catering apartment at the appropriate access point with a hotel or catered stay using the same week and occupancy. Include meals not covered by the package, the transfer, passes, hire, instruction and paid non-ski activities. For lower gateways, add the daily access routine; for high resorts, compare the real walk to lessons rather than treating ski-in/ski-out as an ability-neutral guarantee.
For families, shortlist the school and meeting point before the property. For a mixed group, choose where everyone can spend a reasonable day: a non-skier should not need a full ski itinerary to meet friends for lunch. Shared accommodation does not require everybody to buy the same pass.
Ski places and areas in France: what ski resorts are in the 3 Valleys in the French Alps ? - Les 3 ValléesMeals and non-ski days: stay with your chosen base
Méribel Centre's restaurants and swimming-pool facilities make it a useful mixed-party comparison. Brides-les-Bains has the thermal-spa focus. Saint-Martin offers a historic village and museum rather than the same resort atmosphere as Val Thorens. Those differences should influence the base choice before you book, not become a search for emergency entertainment after arrival.
In Val Thorens, Le Board provides pool, wellness and children's play spaces, and Caron 3200 is a mountain meal and sightseeing option when pedestrian lift access operates. A mountain restaurant in another valley is not a straightforward meeting place for every non-skier. Make lunch plans within the day's accessible area, with a realistic return.
For a first shortlist, compare Val Thorens for ski focus, a specific Méribel base for central access, a named Courchevel village for its own location and accommodation, Les Menuires for the right ski-base routine, and the quieter gateways for a different balance of village or spa time. Then price the actual holiday. The network name alone cannot choose the room, pass or journey for you.
Put named meals and leisure options beside those base choices. Méribel's official network guide lists Le 80, L'Ekrin and L'Allodis for restaurant enquiries, and Maya Altitude as a mountain-lunch idea; a mountain booking still needs an appropriate access and return plan. Courchevel's Aquamotion is a separate pool-and-leisure option for a non-ski afternoon. In Val Thorens, the hotel-versus-apartment comparison can start with Marielle versus Le Cheval Blanc, with Pashmina for an upper-resort spa stay. None of those Val Thorens addresses is a substitute for a room in Méribel or Courchevel simply because the ski pass covers the same network.
