Tignes ski holidays: bases, slopes and getting there

Choose Le Lac, Val Claret, Lavachet, Tignes 1800 or Les Brévières, with local learning, named meals and Bourg-Saint-Maurice transfers.

Who should choose Tignes?

Tignes suits a group that wants a ski-centred stay but is prepared to choose the village carefully. Le Lac, Val Claret, Lavachet, Tignes 1800 and Les Brévières do not deliver the same daily routine. The high-resort centres have different services and evening styles; the lower villages offer another setting with their own lift and road connections.

The linked Tignes–Val d'Isère area gives stronger skiers room to plan wider days, but Tignes also has dedicated learning areas and free beginner lifts. A first-week holiday should be built around those local facilities and the course meeting point, not a requirement to cover the whole domain.

Choose Le Lac as the first comparison for a mixed party wanting central services and indoor leisure. Compare Val Claret for a more explicitly sporty, late-evening resort routine. If the holiday requires a traditional lower-village feel, investigate Les Brévières, but keep the different altitude, access and transport arrangement in the decision. A room described only as Tignes is not specific enough to book well.

Le Lac, Val Claret, Lavachet and the lower villages

Le Lac is the centre of the resort, with shops, the Espace Panorama and Le Lagon wellness centre. That makes it the useful starting point for a group where not everyone skis all day. Check the room's exact side of the village and the course meeting place; a central destination label is not a door-to-snow-front measurement.

Val Claret is the sporty and more festive comparison. It has its own restaurant and evening routine, so consider bedroom position and noise before booking a group apartment above or near late-opening premises. Lavachet is a quieter district with shops and restaurants and free shuttle links to Le Lac and Val Claret. It can suit a party preferring that balance, provided the route fits the lessons.

Tignes 1800 is a separate village between Les Brévières and Le Lac. There is a beginner area and access using the Boisses gondola. Les Brévières sits below the dam at 1,550 metres, with traditional chalets and a link towards 1800. Choose either for its own local routine rather than expecting to walk into Le Lac each evening.

For limited mobility, request the route from the bus stop and entrance to the room, restaurant and activity. A ski-in/ski-out description says little about winter pedestrian access. The Tignes FAQ notes that not all facilities are equipped for wheelchair skiing, so arrange the required specialist provision directly rather than inferring resort-wide accessibility.

Learning first, then the wider ski area

Tignes has dedicated learning areas and several free lifts, according to its FAQ. Place the class and hire booking at the selected village before choosing the pass. Tignes 1800 has a beginner area; elsewhere, use the current learning-area map and the instructor's actual meeting instructions. A generic course in Tignes may be inconvenient from a different village.

Intermediates can build the week outwards from familiar local routes. Begin with a suitable circuit and a clear way back to your own accommodation, then add linked-area days once the group knows its pace. A party staying in Les Brévières needs to think about the return to that village, not just reaching the top of the domain.

Experienced skiers can compare days crossing towards Val d'Isère with staying on the Tignes side. Check the homeward connections before lunch and allow time for queues or weather disruption. The Grande Motte high mountain is part of the destination's appeal, but altitude does not guarantee operation or conditions. Keep a local alternative and do not use a lift connection as an evening transport plan.

For a mixed group, agree a meeting place the learner or non-skier can reach independently. An ambitious route does not become appropriate merely because everyone has the same lift pass.

Named hotels, apartment space and included meals

Hôtel Les Suites in the Maison Bouvier collection is a hotel-and-food option to investigate: the collection also includes the spa, Ursus and La Table de Jeanne. It suits a quotation where meals and time inside the hotel are part of the holiday, rather than only the bed. Confirm the precise location, room arrangement and restaurant inclusions on the offer.

Les Suites du Montana is a separate hotel, not another name for Maison Bouvier's Les Suites. It has slope-side accommodation, Les Bains du Montana spa and access to the Village Montana collection’s restaurants. The similar names make the distinction important: retain the full hotel name and address on every transfer, dinner and accommodation booking.

An apartment in Le Lac, Val Claret or Lavachet gives a different combination of kitchen space and evening independence. Compare the actual unit and route to lessons before the general residence description. A lower-village chalet can work well when the party wants that setting, but it must be compared with its own local services and transport, not with a high-resort room on price alone.

For families, count separate sleeping space and practical meal times. For friends, check bed layout, bathrooms and noise expectations. A room rate with useful meals may compare differently from a cheaper unit once groceries, dinners and extra journeys are added.

UK arrivals: Bourg-Saint-Maurice and S83

Bourg-Saint-Maurice is the closest railway station identified by Tignes. Compare the dated UK rail itinerary, including the seasonal Eurostar Snow option where it runs, with the final mountain connection. Do not infer a year-round through service from a winter-train description; buy the actual trains and allow time for the bus transfer.

S83 serves Les Brévières, Tignes 1800, Le Lac and Val Claret. The bus station is beside the railway station. Choose the stop for the booked village and confirm any onward walk or taxi with luggage. A ticket to Le Lac is not a door delivery to a chalet in Les Brévières, and a stop in the right village may still be distant from the entrance.

For a flight-led trip, compare the airport and the available dated road transfer as one journey, using the resort's transport directory or a confirmed package arrangement. Avoid selecting on flight price and then discovering that the onward service only runs on a different changeover day. Retain baggage allowance, late-arrival policy and the exact final drop-off.

In resort, use the current free-shuttle information for the high-season service and book parking if driving. Tignes makes use of resort car parks compulsory in winter. Finish the arrival plan with key collection, equipment storage and the route to the next morning's lesson, rather than treating the journey as finished at the resort sign.

Where to eat and what non-skiers can do

Maison Bouvier gives several distinct meal formats to compare. Ursus is the planned restaurant evening; La Table de Jeanne serves Savoyard cooking; the bakeries and grocery operation offer another route for breakfasts and apartment meals. Check the address and opening for each rather than treating the collection as a single restaurant beside every accommodation option.

Le Panoramic is the high-mountain meal at 3,032 metres. Access is by the Perce-Neige funicular on skis or on foot, with La Table, La Cantine and a snack option. It can let a non-skier join a mountain lunch when the service and pedestrian arrangements fit, but the trip needs a dated lift plan and a suitable return. A restaurant booking alone does not include transport or establish wheelchair access.

For time in the village, Le Lac has Le Lagon and Espace Panorama in the tourism-office village guide. Those are useful reasons to compare a Le Lac base for a mixed party. Admission and activity opening must be checked separately from accommodation. Do not turn the frozen lake into an improvised walking route: use only the routes and access permitted locally on the day.

A workable group plan keeps some ordinary evenings near the room and chooses one mountain lunch around the skiing and pedestrian access. That avoids making a non-skier's whole holiday depend on a high lift operating every day.

Dates, lift products and a complete budget

For winter 2026/27, compare the current calendar for the selected village, local learning provision and any Val d'Isère crossings. The high mountain, lower-village links, hotel and restaurants need not have identical operating periods. A glacier reference is not a guarantee of snow, open lifts or good visibility.

Price the holiday for one actual week and occupancy. Include UK travel, the final bus or transfer, accommodation and meals, appropriate lift products, hire and tuition. Add winter parking if driving, spa or pool admissions where separate, and non-skier transport. Learners may need a different lift product from confident travellers.

For apartment offers, check linen, cleaning and deposits; for hotels, check the room, board and spa terms. Keep Maison Bouvier's Les Suites separate from Les Suites du Montana when comparing quotations. No live package fare is quoted here: a clear village and product choice is the starting point for a useful price comparison.
