Start with the last mile, not the train terminus
For a Eurostar ski train holiday, Les Arcs is the first resort to compare if reducing the road transfer matters most. Get off at Bourg-Saint-Maurice for the funicular to Arc 1600. Choose La Plagne via Aime-la-Plagne when its village and lesson options suit your party better. Choose Moûtiers for Méribel, Courchevel, Les Menuires or Val Thorens; do not stay on the train to Bourg-Saint-Maurice simply because it is the terminus.
From London, the Eurostar Snow route involves a change at Lille Europe. It is not a direct London-to-resort train. Seasonal services and ordinary Eurostar-plus-SNCF connections are different bookings, and their days of operation need not match. Compare an actual outward and return itinerary before reserving a Saturday-to-Saturday apartment.
Les Arcs: the shortest mountain connection is to Arc 1600
At Bourg-Saint-Maurice, the Les Arcs funicular is beside the railway station and takes around seven minutes to reach Arc 1600. That is the mountain ride, not the whole time from stepping off your train to opening your room. Allow for getting everyone and the bags across, waiting for a departure and reaching the accommodation. Match the funicular operating hours to the train you are actually buying.
Arc 1600 avoids treating another village transfer as a minor detail. Arc 1800, Arc 1950 and Arc 2000 can still work well, but you need a further connection or a booked road transfer. With young children, skis or limited mobility, compare that full sequence against a vehicle directly from the station.
Bourg-Saint-Maurice itself is an alternative for travellers who value a year-round town and rail access over sleeping on the mountain. The trade-off is a daily journey up to ski. Put that commute into lesson-day timings; a valley hotel is not ski-in/ski-out accommodation.
La Plagne: Aime-la-Plagne for the high villages
Aime-la-Plagne is the useful rail gateway to compare for Plagne Centre, Belle Plagne and the other high La Plagne bases. From the station you still need a bus, taxi or arranged transfer up the mountain. Buy to the station that matches the booked transfer, not to a resort name entered loosely into a search box.
La Plagne is a group of villages. A transfer to Plagne Centre does not finish at an apartment in another base, and a school in Belle Plagne may not meet at the same snow front as one in Bellecôte. Landry is another station used for Montchavin and Peisey-Vallandry connections; it is not a universal substitute for Aime.
Choose this over Les Arcs when the accommodation and lesson geography work better for your group, not because both share the Paradiski name. The Vanoise Express ski-area connection does not solve arrival with suitcases or a pedestrian school run.
Three Valleys: get off at Moûtiers
Moûtiers is the rail gateway for Courchevel, Méribel, Les Menuires and Val Thorens. Each still has a road leg. Choose Méribel if being in the middle valley suits your skiing; choose Les Menuires if its accommodation districts and lesson arrangements work better; choose Val Thorens when the high base and longer season are decisive. The train does not make their last miles equivalent.
Les Menuires is 27 kilometres from Moûtiers, with coach, taxi and hire-car options. Its free resort shuttles help move between districts after arrival; they are not a promise of a free railway-station transfer. For Val Thorens, establish the vehicle drop-off and how to reach your building before loading ski bags.
Reserve the bus or transfer against both train numbers. On the return, allow for winter road delays before the fixed rail departure rather than planning around the shortest advertised road time. A private transfer may be worth comparing for a full family or a late arrival, but price the whole vehicle and its waiting policy.
Lille or Paris: two different changes
The London Eurostar Snow route changes at Lille Europe. You leave one train, use the station concourse and find the onward platform. On the way back to London, border control and security at Lille are part of the connection. Do not treat the return as just walking between adjacent trains.
Other rail itineraries can involve Paris. A connection from Gare du Nord to a TGV at Gare de Lyon means changing stations, with your luggage. Eurostar describes an RER D route between the two. The cross-city ride alone is not an adequate connection allowance: include finding the RER, buying the local ticket, reaching the TGV platform and boarding. Choose the connection sold for your actual itinerary rather than copying a generic minimum.
An overnight stop can make a complicated connection more manageable, but adds a hotel and changes how many nights you need in resort. Compare that honest itinerary against flying, rather than claiming every rail holiday is a same-day eight-hour trip.
Check a real departure before committing to the week
Eurostar's London ski-train information currently says its Eurostar Snow tickets are not available for sale. Do not read the route description or its example Saturday pattern as a bookable departure for your chosen week. Search both directions, then compare ordinary Eurostar and SNCF connections if the seasonal service does not appear.
An outbound train alone is not a holiday booking. Match the return day, accommodation check-out and final mountain transfer as one itinerary. A Sunday return may require an extra night, baggage storage or a different apartment contract. Ask a package seller whether the rail tickets, last mile, accommodation and lift pass are included, and who helps when a connection is missed.
If booking separately, record the exchange and cancellation terms of each ticket and transfer. Do not assume a missed train automatically protects a separately bought hotel or bus. Keep the station transfer operator's contact details accessible and allow a contingency for the last onward service of the day.
Luggage and assisted travel change the best route
On the London–Lille leg, Eurostar lists two bags up to 85 centimetres long, one hand-luggage item, and skis or a snowboard for adults. Check the allowance for every onward train too: the same rail holiday can use different operators. You carry the bags between trains, so a nominally generous allowance does not tell you whether the change is manageable with children. Hiring skis in resort can simplify the journey even when transporting your own equipment is permitted.
For assisted travel, arrange assistance for the departures and arrivals on every leg. Eurostar's connecting-journey guidance requires requests at least 24 hours ahead and does not provide assistance between different Paris stations. A ticket with a Paris connection therefore needs a separate cross-city access plan.
Likewise, a funicular or transfer vehicle being available does not prove the complete route to a room is step-free. Give operators the chair or mobility-aid dimensions and ask about boarding, accessible vehicle availability and the final approach to the building. Choose a simpler connection if those arrangements cannot be confirmed.
Which rail holiday should you book?
Choose Arc 1600 if the train-to-funicular arrival is your main reason for taking rail. Choose La Plagne when its named beginner zone and apartment solve the holiday better and you accept a road transfer. Choose a Three Valleys base when that valley's skiing is worth the final road leg; Moûtiers is the station to plan around. These are resort choices first, not interchangeable stops on one train.
Before paying, put the complete outward and return journeys beside the accommodation contract: home to London, station arrival, trains, each connection, mountain transfer and the last walk. Add meals and any overnight stop to the quote. If rail costs more or uses more holiday time on your dates, decide whether avoiding the flight and airport process is worth that difference for your group. There is no universal cheapest or fastest mode.
For a first ski trip, place the arrival early enough to fit equipment and find the lesson. For Christmas or Easter, check the operating period of the resort as well as the trains. A rail timetable cannot establish that the slopes or school are running.
