An early Easter and a late school break are different ski trips
For an Easter ski holiday in 2027, start with Val Thorens, Tignes and Les Arcs, then compare the exact school-break week. Easter Sunday is 28 March 2027, but your school's holiday can extend into April. The name Easter does not describe one uniform snow or operating period. Choose a high base and a suitable learning area, rather than relying on the altitude of a distant summit.
Val Thorens and Tignes both plan local skiing through 2 May 2027. Les Arcs lists a 24 April finish. Those windows make a useful shortlist, not a snow guarantee or a promise that all terrain will stay open. The distinction is particularly important after mid-April, when a local high-altitude area can remain open beyond its wider linked network.
Val Thorens: separate the local season from the Three Valleys
Val Thorens–Orelle is scheduled to run until 2 May 2027, while the wider Three Valleys season is listed until 18 April. If you travel after that linked-area date, plan around the local area rather than buying the holiday for repeated days in Méribel or Courchevel. A pass name cannot make a closed connection run.
Choose Val Thorens when a high accommodation base and the later local season are the main priorities. Compare the precise apartment or hotel with the beginner meeting point, shops and pedestrian route. A residence described as ski-in/ski-out can still involve an unsuitable return for a first-timer; ask the school which access works without skiing.
For a mixed group, give non-skiers a village plan and agree a lunch accessible without a difficult descent. The long calendar does not make every mountain restaurant or activity available every day. If the whole group wants the wider Three Valleys, choose a week within its planned window and still check the actual lift status.
Tignes: a long season, with the village choice still decisive
Tignes plans skiing through 2 May 2027, with a distinct final-week pass period from 24 April. That makes it worth comparing for a late school break or a spring trip after other resorts have closed. Do not read the closing date as proof that every route to every village remains open. Match the week's planned sectors and your lesson to the accommodation.
Tignes le Lac and Val Claret are the high-base choices to compare first; Les Brévières is a separate lower village, not an interchangeable accommodation label. For a beginner family, proximity to the right meeting point matters more than an ambitious plan to reach the glacier. Ask which practice lifts and pedestrian routes the course uses on your dates.
For experienced skiers, the linked area with Val d'Isère adds variety when the relevant connections operate. For a non-skier, use the village and indoor-activity options in the Tignes guide to build a day that does not depend on following the ski group. Book the spring week for the area actually available, not the largest piste total in a winter brochure.
Les Arcs: a useful Easter alternative when rail matters
Les Arcs lists skiing from 12 December 2026 to 24 April 2027. Its Les Arcs–Peisey-Vallandry area has 70% of its slopes above 2,000 metres, but the villages and lower returns are not all at the same altitude. Use the actual base and route to the lesson when comparing an Easter apartment.
Arc 1600 is the rail-first choice because the Bourg-Saint-Maurice funicular arrives there. Arc 1800 offers four pedestrian neighbourhoods and activities including swimming and bowling. Arc 1950 and Arc 2000 are distinct higher bases with a different last-mile journey. A higher room may suit your priorities, but does not remove the need to confirm the beginner area's opening.
Choose Les Arcs over Val Thorens when its village layout and rail arrival suit the whole group better and your week falls within its season. Choose Val Thorens or Tignes for a later trip when Les Arcs' planned closing date cuts across your stay. A seven-night booking spanning a closing day needs an explicit non-ski plan for the remaining days.
March, early April or late April?
Around the March Easter weekend, these three shortlisted resorts sit within their planned winter windows. The practical decision is the base, lesson and whole-family journey rather than a blanket claim that Easter is too late. Check the child's actual school dates: moving the holiday by a week changes both the fare and the course you can book.
In early April, keep the same base-level checks and compare the entire holiday cost. A spring offer for a different week or a different number of ski days is not a like-for-like saving. Do not assume Easter is quieter or cheaper than February on your particular dates; test the two real quotes.
After 18 April, Val Thorens' local season and the wider Three Valleys calendar diverge. After 24 April, Les Arcs' listed season has ended while Tignes and Val Thorens plan to continue into May. Those are meaningful cut-offs for choosing the resort. They do not tell you the daily weather, the extent of open terrain or whether a particular school will run a group.
Plan a spring ski day, not a fixed snow timetable
Spring snow can change through the day. Overnight freezing, sunshine, aspect, wind and altitude all affect the surface, so the same run need not ski the same way at morning and afternoon. Follow the instructor's choice of terrain and the day's opening information; a calendar month cannot prescribe a safe descent.
For a learner, keep the booked lesson as the fixed part of the day and leave afternoon practice optional. A morning lesson may fit a family that wants a shorter ski day followed by lunch and time indoors. It is not a promise of soft snow at a particular hour. If the surface or visibility is beyond the learner's level, stop rather than completing a planned number of runs.
For a mixed-ability party, agree a pedestrian-accessible lunch and a return route before separating. Do not make the beginner descend a closing or difficult piste simply to meet everybody else. A long spring day gives you time for a meal or swim; it does not require a longer skiing day.
Families and non-skiers: choose the afternoon as carefully as the slopes
For a family travelling at Easter, a named beginner area and a manageable lesson handover are more useful than a glacier in the distance. La Plagne's CoolSki zones illustrate the right level of detail: identify the village and zone, then confirm they are operating for your course. Do not transfer that resort's ticket or opening rules to a different mountain.
In Les Arcs, Arc 1800's swimming and bowling options give non-skiers a reason to compare that base with Arc 1600's simpler rail arrival. If your group is more interested in a car-free village and a water park, compare Avoriaz as a different holiday, but check its own spring operating dates before committing. Do not assume it shares the May closing date of Tignes.
For mobility needs, check the whole route from accommodation to the activity, not just the presence of an accessible lift. Snow-covered paths, stairs and the transfer vehicle can be the limiting part of the day. Obtain the room and equipment arrangements before paying for a package labelled family-friendly or accessible.
Book the complete Easter week in the right order
Write down the exact nights, arrival time, ski days and return journey. Compare those dates with the local ski area, any linked area you expect to use and the school course. Reserve an age- and ability-appropriate lesson before choosing accommodation that depends on it. Then book the room, travel and final transfer as one workable sequence.
Keep a comparable total for accommodation, transport, bags, lessons, required passes, equipment, food and childcare. A discounted late-season pass is useful only if the week's open terrain fits your ability and the course will run. Do not buy a full linked-area ticket solely for access you will not use.
Check cancellation terms for snow or operating changes and the activities covered by your winter-sports insurance. Before departure, revisit the live lift and piste information rather than relying only on the planned closing dates. The best Easter choice is the resort where the available skiing, afternoon and journey fit your actual week.
